In Hyderabad, artisans at the foothills of Tirumala are known for their intricate wood carvings of Lord Balaji and other deities which have been crafted for over a century. They are now planning to apply for a geographical indication tag for their Madhavamala wood carvings, which include lifelike idols, dolls, toys, doors, windows, furniture, and more. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will submit the GI application with the help of NABARD. This will be the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, as stated by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha who is assisting the artisans in the process.
